A little something I thought up for the influence skill, or maybe as a unique ability of bards.
Usage:
reputation <person> <title>
The idea is to temporarily change another character's title, perhaps with a duration similar to spells, based on your influence skill.
Thoughts, hopes, great idea, terrible idea? I think it would be RP gold, if not abused.

"Everybody dies sometime..."
I'm curious what specific effect you wished this to have?
I mean, if a bard really hated me and wanted to discredit my character.. could they type: Reputation Selveem Cyricist?
If so, I really don't like this.
First, there has to be some sort of check. For someone to besmirch another's reputation in such a grave manner - especially a well-known character it would take some doing and massive amounts of convincing.
Also, the character would be able to find out who has been talking badly about them.
I like the idea in some ways because it could really give a bite to Bards in the social settings that they are the masters of, but I do think it needs to be fleshed out more to give this idea a fair thought.

While it may have merit, i do not agree with this suggestion. First off titles are IC by rule. But really you use a title in an OOC way.
<gnome> Japcil Kawalk, Priest of Garl
<human> Paige, Pop Princess
<unknown> Moloch the blue
You just died, you type who to see who is online and is a priest. Can we really say we use the who list and titles in a true IC way and can justify using ic things like xp and skills to alter them?

Hmmm! This is an interesting idea. Might I suggest:
1) We call it besmirch, unless it might also be used to bolster someone's reputation? (In which case reputation is a fine name, or perhaps rumour)
2) We make the likelihood that the rumoured title appears inversely proportional to the age or number of hours on a PC? Thus, an 18-year old PC with 20 hours played is far more likely to see the bogus title than a veteran?
3) The PC who's the target of this would get an echo, saying "So-and-so is seeding rumours about you, telling folks that you are *blah*" (with the hope that if it was truly out of line, this would be grounds for a complaint)?
This is playing with fire, I'll grant...but it could also be a neat RP twist. The WHO list doesn't tell you who's a priest, in many cases, right now, does it? This also wouldn't allow you to mess with anyone's name, just their title, yes?

I think this would be much more interesting as an actualy player variable, similar to in Baldur's Gate how you gain reputation by doing good deeds and lose it by doing evil things. Certain quests could increase your reputation, decrease it, and certain players such as bards perhaps, or faith managers, or maybe everyone, could mark their own idea of a person's reputation. This might affect which shopkeepers will sell to you, whether commands like demand or request work, and maybe other things.
