Potential Tournament - Realms Invitational?

Post by Talos » Sat May 27, 2017 8:47 pm

Gauging interest in a realms wide tournament season that functions like a series of pick-up duels. A proper bracket with contestants matched to others of similar power, but the sanctioned bouts we can run across the space of a month or more as people have the time to get together. Volunteers can be used as witnesses to record and submit results as the bracket progresses, maybe even logs of the battle with color commentary written in and posted.

The ultimate winner would likely get a custom set of magic full armour and a transferable title item they would have to occasionally defend.

This is likely open to all classes, but classes would be paired with each other where possible for balance.

Who would be interested in this sort of 'sporting season' of combat? The more replies posted here, the more we can get on board, the better able we could make this happen.
A goblin, a trickster, a warrior? A nameless terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. A most feared being in all the cosmos. Nothing could stop, hold, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.

I know I would, sounds like a fairly fun time!

Is this real life?

I'd very much be interested.

Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyeeeees.

I'd be glad to help where/if help is needed, too!

Edit - The one concern I'd raise is that while starting people off by dueling other members of their class is excellent, presumably the contestant pool would eventually dwindle and you run into the age-old problem of D&D's not having been built with PvP in mind. i.e., in a 'fair' fight, the practiced wizard will always beat the fighter, the practiced fighter will always beat the cleric, the practiced cleric will arguably usually beat the wizard (unless the wizard happens to know the tricks of cleric killing--mwahaha), and everyone will beat the poor rogue without breaking a sweat (sorry, roguish friends). I don't have any problem with it personally. I by some twisted sense of amusement enjoy watching my warriors get blasted away in so many directions by a wizard in six seconds flat. But I realize I'm... not entirely normal. It's something to consider, perhaps.

Ailyn has never been one for PvP type ordeals, but will gladly be of help in the field of watching over events and offering healing afterwards if needed. Mostly as Areia said, clerics can rarely if ever beat a practiced fighter, so it seem of little use to attempt to when I can instead help out in other places. :P

Simossus is a plague-ridden Jonah Hill. I'll never be able to unsee that.

Doesn't displease me at all. Is this a good time to plug r/eyebleach?

I'm not sure of the structure Talos has in mind for the tournament, but I'm in favor of trying to meld solo power into teamplay. The nature of a tournament should reveal a consistently powerful force. The powerful should be recognized and they should contest for the 'champion' position, but the majority tournaments of the past have always been created to test one individual class. And since we have blessing of Talos to run this thing for a proposed month or longer, why not go all the way? We have all the tools in form of IC letters, IC note board, IC tells and word of mouth in addition to the forum. Threads can be created for each individual week, used throughout the week and then closed or deleted.

Example of 40 contestants. Important to note that it is by design that no contestant will be cut from later stages from losses. A contestant with the minimal 12 points will have the same opportunities to become champion. They will, by the end of the stages, be seeded low and have to face the highest contenders, but they will have the same opportunities. Each contestant will take part in 12 bouts at the very, very minimum. Any refusal of a contestant to subject themselves to a court-of-the-Realms-ordered screening of performance enhancing potions are liable to be fined and disallowed from further contests within the Realms Invitational™ influence.
Stage 1:
4 rounds of round robin: 20 matches per round of 1v1s. 3 points for a win, 1 point for loss. Max possible points 12, minimum 4. The mean value of 8 averages a 2-win and 2-loss record.

Possible range 12 10 8 6 4.
Stage 2:
We then enter into 4 rounds of 2v2s. Pairs will be randomly decided by attempting to average the two contestant's points as close to 7(?) as possible. It would be designed to where the extremes of the above/below-average are paired together while the mid-range of the pack suffers the least difference as per the point system. I base this just off of personal experience, but I would see a pair of the average contestants a large hurdle for the high/low pair. Always subject to change. I would have the pairs split and matched again after each round. Points for this stage will be awarded as previous, but not factored into the current match-making. 3 per win, 1 per loss.

24 max, 8 min, 16 mean.
Stage 3:
Back to 1v1s. 4 rounds of a seeded double-elimination tournament but with the intention of being class-specific. Upon gaining your first loss, you will then be placed into the loser's bracket with the chance of progressing to the finals. Finals should be best of 3, in my opinion. Points will be rewarded and attributed to your class-specific ranking.

Stage 4:
Another double-elimination tournament of 2v2s that consists of teams of 3(or more?) contestants. Teams will be determined by overall points and class-specific ranking. No seeding bracket will be implemented and each team randomly given lots. Each team will be made public knowledge. Each team will select one PC from the opposing team that will have no option but be included in the next 2v2 bout. Teams will have to decide on the second member. This could get incredibly tricky, but I desperately want this to happen. It will require a lot of shuffling to make sure the selected players from either side can be online at the same time. Points gained will be shared by the entire team. 2 per win, 2 per loss.(?) This was

Stage 5:
Double-elimination for 1v1s. Loser's bracket and all. This is for all the marbles. Class-specific ranking goes out the door and points determine the seeding. With all the previous stages, there better not be a damn tie in points. :D To be noted that there may be bye rounds for the higher seeds. BO3s for the finals?

This is just me rambling on, now, but I believe a variation of this style would do very well in FK. There are so many possibilities and we really do have the tools to make it work.

Before we get too complicated we'll start with a 12-16 participant bracket. Post here or by pm with which character you would like to enter. One character per person to start.

This is a realms wide tournament, this means all races, alignments, and classes are open to enter. We will attempt to pair people as close as possible for balance.
